When Will Prabowo Stop Being Indonesia's President? Term and Rules

What the 1945 Constitution says

The Constitutional Court publishes an English translation; the official Indonesian text is on the MPR's website. Article 7 allows a president one re-election to the same post. Under Article 9, a new president takes an oath before the MPR or the House of Representatives (DPR), and Article 3 lets the MPR remove a president during the term only as the constitution provides.

The MPR's official record of its sitting on Sunday 20 October 2024 shows Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, named the elected pair for 2024 to 2029 with 58.59% of the valid vote in the General Elections Commission's decision No. 504 of 2024, taking their oaths. The Assembly's chair then declared them president and vice president for that term.

Removal involves three bodies (Articles 7A and 7B). The DPR may propose it only on the grounds Article 7A lists (the breaches of the law it names, or no longer meeting the requirements for the office), and only after asking the Constitutional Court to rule, which the court must do within 90 days. If the court upholds the case, the DPR forwards its proposal and the MPR must meet on it within 30 days. Removal needs a sitting attended by at least three quarters of MPR members, with at least two thirds of those present in favour, after the president has had the chance to explain.

Succession follows Article 8: in the situations it lists, among them resignation and removal, the vice president takes over until the term expires. The vice president is Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the 14th, serving 2024 to 2029, according to his office's official site, where a news item dated Wednesday 28 October 2026 refers to President Prabowo Subianto. The MPR must then meet within 60 days to elect a new vice president from two candidates the president proposes. If both posts fall empty at once, the ministers of foreign affairs, home affairs and defence act jointly until the MPR, meeting within 30 days, elects a new pair.

Three dates and what each would mean

• Wednesday 30 June 2027: the windows of the June 30, 2027 answer and the Yes or No prediction end at 04:59 UK time (BST) on 1 July 2027, each resolving Yes only if something that counts has happened by then.
• Saturday 20 October 2029: the first term ends, beyond both windows. Staying on after that would need re-election, which Article 7 allows once.
