GPT-7 Release Date: Still Unannounced After GPT-6.1 Terra
OpenAI has not named a GPT-7 date. Its newest model, GPT-6.1 Terra, came out on 26 October 2026. What has shipped, and what the versus predictions count.
versus Editorial · 17 October 2026
No GPT-7 release date has been announced: as of 27 October 2026, no OpenAI page we checked names a GPT-7, and OpenAI’s most recent model release is GPT-6.1 Terra, which arrived on 26 October 2026. On versus, Will OpenAI release GPT-7 by 30 Jun 2027? showed Yes at 47.5p at 06:38 UK time (GMT) on 27 October 2026, the market’s estimate of a 47.5% chance.
At the same time, Will OpenAI release Astra 6.1 or later to the public by 31 Dec? showed Yes at 87p. A third prediction, Will OpenAI’s GPT Terra reach version 5.7 by 30 Nov?, is now settled; the name tests below set the Terra release beside its terms. This guide is for readers in Great Britain.
Astra, Sol, Terra and Luna: what the names mean
OpenAI brought in tier names with GPT-5.6 on 9 July 2026. Its launch post calls Sol the flagship, Terra a lower-cost model for everyday work and Luna the fastest and cheapest, and says the number marks the generation while each tier can move up on its own timetable. The GPT-6 guide now lists four models: GPT-6 Astra for the highest intelligence, GPT-6.1 Sol for a balance of speed, cost and intelligence, GPT-6.1 Terra as fast and efficient, and GPT-6 Luna as the fastest and most cost-effective. The full model catalogue has no GPT-6 Terra: the tier went from GPT-5.6 Terra straight to GPT-6.1 Terra. Because the versus rules accept a GPT-7 from any tier, the first GPT-7 need not be an Astra.
GPT-7 on OpenAI’s own pages
On 27 October 2026 we searched OpenAI’s news page and every post title and summary in its news feed, the API changelog, the model catalogue and GPT-6 guide, the deprecations page, the ChatGPT release notes and the GPT-6.1 Terra announcement. None mentions GPT-7 or an Astra numbered 6.1 or higher, and none gives a release date for a model that is not yet out. The Terra post measures the new model against GPT-6 Astra, which it calls OpenAI’s most capable frontier model, and says nothing about what comes next.
From GPT-5 to GPT-6.1 Terra: the dated record
Dates are from OpenAI’s own announcements, changelog and release notes.
- 7 August 2025: GPT-5, followed by point releases up to GPT-5.5 in April 2026.
- 9 July 2026: the GPT-5.6 family of Sol, Terra and Luna.
- 3 September 2026: GPT-6 Astra, first for a limited set of organisations, with wider ChatGPT and API access promised within days.
- 22 September 2026: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna.
- 29 September 2026: GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol.
- 7 October 2026: GPT-6 began rolling out in the Chat tab of ChatGPT, running on GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.
- 26 October 2026: GPT-6.1 Terra, rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, according to the release notes, and in the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
How long OpenAI’s steps have taken
This is arithmetic on past dates, not a schedule. GPT-4, dated 14 March 2023 on OpenAI’s GPT-4 page, came 877 days before GPT-5, and GPT-5 came 392 days before GPT-6 Astra. The GPT-7 cut-off falls 300 days after Astra, shorter than either gap. Inside the GPT-6 generation the tiers have not moved together: Sol and Luna went from 5.6 to 6 in 75 days and Sol reached 6.1 seven days later, while Terra took 109 days to go from 5.6 to 6.1. GPT-6 Astra has had no successor in the 54 days to 27 October, with the Astra cut-off at day 119.
Two open name tests and one settled prediction
GPT-7 by 30 June 2027
- Counts: a general-purpose OpenAI model with GPT and a version of 7 or higher in its name or ID, from any family, such as plain GPT-7, GPT-7 Sol, GPT-7.1 or GPT-8. The window opened on 4 September 2026.
- Does not count: anything still numbered 6, GPT-6.1 Terra included, a name without an explicit 7 or above, and specialist lines (Codex, image, Daybreak and Cyber, Realtime voice, speech and transcription models) whatever their number.
Astra 6.1 by 31 December
- Counts: an OpenAI model with Astra in its name or ID and a version of 6.1 or more, such as a GPT-6.1 Astra, an Astra 6.5 or a GPT-7 Astra. The window opened at 16:45 UTC (17:45 BST) on 4 September 2026.
- Does not count: GPT-6 Astra in any form, whether a wider rollout, a cheaper offer, a Pro or Fast version or a new snapshot. That rules out GPT-6 Pro, which OpenAI’s help centre says is powered by GPT-6 Astra, and Astra’s Ultrafast mode. Sol, Terra and Luna models, GPT-6.1 Terra among them, and single-task lines fail too.
Both share one access test: the model has to be released to the general public, not only to invited testers, and an open beta or a waitlist anyone can join is enough. OpenAI must say so publicly, or the model must really be usable and clearly labelled on its website; mislabelled pages and placeholders do not count. OpenAI’s own information decides, with reliable news reports as a cross-check. No model released since 4 September passes either name test.
GPT Terra 5.7 by 30 November: settled
This prediction asked for a public model with GPT, Terra and a version of at least 5.7 in its name or ID, released between 14 August and 30 November 2026; GPT-5.6 Terra itself and any model whose name lacks Terra were excluded. On 26 October 2026 OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, API ID gpt-6.1-terra, in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. The versus page now shows the prediction as settled; set those facts beside its two answers there.
When the open predictions could settle, in UK time
- Any day: OpenAI’s API changelog has listed each GPT-6 model on its launch day, most recently GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October. A qualifying public release would decide its prediction as Yes, and a GPT-7 Astra by 31 December would count for both.
- Thursday 31 December 2026: the Astra cut-off at 23:59 UTC, which is 23:59 GMT in the UK and 6:59 pm in New York. Without a qualifying Astra by then, the rules give No.
- Wednesday 30 June 2027, 11:59 pm Eastern Time: the GPT-7 cut-off, 04:59 BST on Thursday 1 July 2027. The listed end date is earlier, 23:59 UTC on 30 June (00:59 BST on 1 July), so check both.
Before you trade
A price runs from 0p to 100p and is the market’s estimate of a chance: a winning contract settles at 100p and a losing one at 0p, so you can lose the whole amount you put into a position. versus adds a 2% transaction fee on top of the stake and shows it before you confirm, and while a market is open you can sell your position at the current price.

Frequently asked questions
When is the GPT-7 release date?
OpenAI has not given one, and no OpenAI page we checked on 27 October 2026 mentions GPT-7. The versus rules count a release up to 11:59 pm Eastern Time on 30 June 2027 (04:59 BST on 1 July); the page lists the end as 23:59 UTC that day (00:59 BST on 1 July).
What is OpenAI’s newest model?
GPT-6.1 Terra, released on 26 October 2026, is OpenAI’s most recent model release. GPT-6 Astra, released on 3 September 2026, is the one OpenAI calls its most capable.
Does GPT-6.1 Terra count as GPT-7?
No. It is numbered 6.1, and the GPT-7 prediction needs a GPT model numbered 7 or higher. With no Astra in its name, it does not count for the Astra prediction either.
Is Astra 6.1 out?
No. The only Astra so far is GPT-6 Astra, and no OpenAI page we checked on 27 October 2026 mentions an Astra 6.1.
